Privacy Policy

Memex (“we”, “our”, “us”) is an AI Markdown canvas app: you arrange Markdown documents and PDFs on a canvas, write with Apple Pencil, and can ask an AI chat about what you add to it. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle your information.

Information We Collect

Memex is designed with privacy in mind. We collect minimal data:

  • Analytics data: We use RouteRev, our own analytics service, to record app opens and onboarding, activation, paywall, and purchase funnel steps. Documents, canvases, ink and AI conversations are never included in these events.
  • Install and visit sources: We use RouteRev, our own analytics service, to learn which campaigns and websites bring people to Memex. It records app opens, visits to this website, a random identifier for each app install or browser, and the country and city derived from your network address (the address itself is not stored). If you installed Memex from an Apple Search Ads ad, Apple tells us which campaign it was, without identifying you. This data is not used to track you across other companies' apps or websites.
  • Website visits: This website also uses Vercel Analytics to count page views. It does not use cookies and is not linked to the app.
  • AI requests: Only when you use the AI chat or Make image. See AI features below for exactly what is sent and to whom.
  • Crash reports: We collect anonymous crash reports to identify and fix bugs.
  • Subscription status: Memex trial, purchase, renewal, and restore status is handled through Apple and RevenueCat. We do not receive your full payment card details.

Local Data & iCloud

Memex works primarily with local files on your device, synced via iCloud Drive. Your documents, canvases and bookmarks remain on your device and in your iCloud account. We do not have access to your files. Images you make with Memex and AI replies you put on a canvas are saved there too, as part of your own files.

AI features

Memex has an AI chat and a Make image tool. Nothing is sent unless you use them, and you choose what goes in: a chat only sees the cards, documents and PDFs you add to it and the text you type.

  • What is sent: your chat messages, the content of anything you add to the chat, and the earlier messages in that conversation; or, for Make image, the prompt made from the text or handwriting you selected.
  • Who receives it: the request goes from the app to our proxy at trymemex.com, which passes it to OpenRouter, which sends it to an OpenAI model to write the reply or draw the image. OpenRouter and OpenAI handle it under their own privacy policies.
  • What we keep: nothing of your content. Our proxy does not store or log your messages, context, prompts, replies or images, and we never use them to train models. To count your monthly AI credits, it keeps only a count per subscription and month, tied to the anonymous ID our subscription provider assigns, and a count of free messages per app install, plus short request logs (route, status, a hashed subscription ID, credits used and timing) that contain no content.
  • Everything else (your library, canvases, Pencil ink and anything you don't add to a chat) never leaves your device and your iCloud.

Purchases

Memex subscriptions and free trials are processed by Apple. RevenueCat is used to validate subscription status, trial access, and restore purchases. Purchase status may be shared with RevenueCat for this purpose, but your documents and canvases are not uploaded to RevenueCat.

Data Sharing

We do not sell or trade your personal information. Analytics data is processed by RouteRev, which we operate ourselves. The only content we pass to third parties is what you send through the AI features, as described above, and only to answer your request.

Data Retention

Analytics data is retained for up to 12 months. You can request deletion of any data associated with your device by contacting us.

Children's Privacy

Memex is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page.
